Single Rope Technique (SRT) Introduction Day

This 1-day surface training course is aimed at those new to Single Rope Technique (SRT) or with limited experience. All equipment is provided.

Overview

The training day will usually take place at a surface facility and will be run by a holder of the Cave Instructor Certificate, which is the UK’s highest caving qualification. The course is designed for those with limited or no experience in SRT and can be attended by anyone with suitable fitness and a desire to start learning the basic manoeuvres needed to ascend and descend straightforward rope pitches in caves and mines. The pace of the course will be tailored to the participants, but where appropriate and possible, the contents will include;

  • Assembling an SRT kit from individual components and understanding the use of each element.
  • Pitch-head safety. Moving on and off the pitch with cowstails for protection.
  • Abseiling safely with an autolocking descender. Locking off descenders mid-pitch.
  • Ascending a rope safely and efficiently.
  • Changing direction whilst on a rope.

This workshop is for straightforward SRT pitches with no rebelays or deviations. Other training days are available for rigging, more complex SRT manoeuvres, and self-rescue.

What’s Included in the SRT Introduction Day?

The workshop price includes the provision of all ropes and SRT equipment that are needed. Participants who have their own equipment are welcome to use it on this course, but all personal equipment must be in a safe and well-maintained condition and be within the manufacturer’s recommended lifespan.
We recommend the following retailers for those looking to purchase their own SRT equipment: Starless River & Inglesport.

A set of training notes will be provided to each participant.

Participants will need to bring their own food and drink, plus have appropriate clothing and equipment for the prevailing weather. Full joining instructions will be provided by email to anyone who books onto a course.
