Vertical Adventure Caving

Vertical Adventure Caving trips combine the enjoyment of a trip in the underground world with the physical & mental challenge of vertical progression. You’ll abseil deep into the cave and then need to climb back out.

Vertical Adventure Caving

This 3+ hour caving activity will involve a trip into one of the area’s vertical cave or mine systems. The trips will be a challenging journey with different vertical elements along the way. Depending on which venue we visit on the day, you may come across waterfalls, shafts, abseils, traverses, scrambles and wire ladders. Add to this the fact that there is not a way out the bottom and you will need to get back out again, and you’ve got yourself a great adventure. You don’t have to have any previous experience for this activity, and it can be enjoyed by anyone who is adventurous and 16 years old or above. The caving is quite physical, so good fitness levels will be needed. We will provide kneepads for you, as a certain amount of crawling is part of the experience.

A Vertical Adventure Caving Trip is perfect for anyone looking for a good old fashioned physical challenge. You don’t have to have caved before, but should be comfortable underground and at height. This experience is physical but can ultimately be enjoyed by anyone with good fitness and the mental fortitude to have an adventure. We keep our groups small, so it feels like a very personal service, you’ll be part of group with a maximum ratio of 6 people to 1 instructor.

Times
Start times can vary, so check the times available on the listed dates above.
Overall, the activity will last between 3 and 4 hours depending on group size and this includes the kitting up time. We don’t set a definitive finish time as some groups may take longer and we don’t wish to rush to meet a set time, so do allow 4 or so hours for this activity.
Overview
This activity will involve a trip into a local cave (or mine system if weather poor). Depending on which venue we visit on the day, you may come across waterfalls, shafts, abseils, traverses, scrambles and wire ladders. It’s not all about the physical adventure, there’s plenty of history and geology to see too.
Participant Suitability
No prior experience is needed. Good fitness levels are required and we aim to challenge you. The site is predominantly uneven, smooth rock with low roofs that require stooping and crawling. You will likely be moving in flowing water at times. You will need to walk/stoop/crawl up to 2km over the whole experience, but this broken up into sections and includes the walk to and from the cave. This activity can be enjoyed by anyone 16 years old or above. Parents of younger children can contact us for a chat about bringing younger, but mentally mature children along.
All safety equipment, caving specific clothing and gloves are provided.
Your group will have its own instructor.
We always endeavour to bring one of our cameras along to our activities (subject to breakages etc..). Photos are provided free of charge when they are taken by us.
Please Bring
You will need your own transport to get to and from the activity meeting point and then to follow in convoy to lane where the cave is located. Meeting locations will be confirmed after booking. The activity takes place near Castleton, Derbyshire.
We will provide wellies if needed. If you have your own please bring them, so long as they are rubber soled and not plastic.
Please read the clothing advice and make sure you bring enough layers. The cave is only around 8 degrees.
A hair tie for long hair is a good idea.
In hot weather, bringing a bottle of water is a good idea. Some waterproof snacks that will fit in a pocket are recommended.
Accessibility
The site is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible, so we would class this activity as unsuitable for those who are wheelchair dependant. We can sometimes accommodate individuals with mobility issues or other physical conditions on our activities, but we would like to have a conversation with you prior to booking so we can discuss arranging a bespoke activity for you.
Other
Sorry but dogs are not permitted on this activity.
All under 18’s must be accompanied by a paying parent. Spectators are not allowed unless they have paid for a slot on the activity. As a rule, this means that participating children must be accompanied by a paying, participating parent.
