Discover Mine Exploration

Join us & Discover Mine Exploration as you take a journey back in time to experience the history & geology of an abandoned mine. You’ll spend time underground learning how the miners extracted the valuable ore and experience some challenges along the way.

Discover Mine Exploration with Peak Instruction.

You don’t have to have any previous experience for this activity, and it can be enjoyed by anyone 10 years old or above. The activity can be quite physical if you choose to test yourself, but normal fitness levels will be fine. We will provide kneepads for you, as a certain amount of crawling is part of the experience.

This 2-3 hour activity will involve a trip into a local mine system. Depending on which mine we visit on the day, you may come across short scrambles, flowing water, sticky mud and even the option to try some challenges or longer, more physical sections of mine passage.

A Discover Mining Trip is perfect for anyone who has never experienced a mine or even been underground before. It’s ideal for families, individuals or small groups wanting to discover what mine exploration is really like without committing to a full day underground. Our aim is to give you a friendly introduction to the sport in a relaxed setting where harder challenges are your choice to take part in or not. We keep our groups small, so it feels like a very personal service, you’ll be part of group of up to a maximum of 8 people to 1 instructor.

Overview
This activity will involve a trip into a local mine. Depending on which mine we visit on the day, you may come across short scrambles, flowing or static water, mud and even the option to try some physical challenges. Our aim is to give you a friendly introduction to the sport in a relaxed setting where harder challenges are your choice to take part in or not.
Participant Suitability
You do not need any prior experience for this activity. Average fitness levels are all that is required, although we do have a steep walk up at a gentle pace. The site is predominantly uneven, smooth rock with some short steep sections and low roofs that require stooping. The walk up to the mine can be very steep in places. You will need to walk around 1.5km over the whole experience, but this broken up into sections. Anyone who is 10 years old or above can enjoy this activity.
Included in the cost
All safety equipment, caving specific clothing and gloves are provided.
Your group will have its own instructor.
We always endeavour to bring one of our cameras along to our activities (subject to breakages etc..). Photos are provided free of charge when they are taken by us.
Please Bring
You will need your own transport to get to and from the activity meeting point. You will need to bring change for the public car park so that you can pay for your parking. Parking locations will be confirmed after booking. The activity takes place near Matlock Bath, Derbyshire.
We will provide wellies if needed. If you have your own please bring them, so long as they are rubber soled and not plastic.
Please read the clothing advice and make sure you bring enough layers, because the mine is only around 8 degrees.
A hair tie for long hair is a good idea.
In hot weather, bringing a bottle of water is a good idea.
Accessibility
The site is not wheelchair accessible, so we are sorry to say that this activity is unsuitable for those who are wheelchair dependant. We can sometimes accommodate individuals with mobility issues or other physical conditions on this activity, but we would like to have a conversation with you prior to booking. Sadly it is not always possible to accommodate people on the Discover Mine Exploration sessions due to the terrain of the site and steep approach walk, but we might be able to arrange a bespoke activity for you.
Other
Sorry but dogs are not permitted on this activity.
The challenges are all optional and if you don’t wish to do one there will be no pressure from our staff team. In that circumstance, you can easily bypass the challenge or watch.
All under 18’s must be accompanied by a paying parent. Spectators are not allowed unless they have paid for a slot on the activity. As a rule, this means that participating children must be accompanied by a paying, participating parent.

Pete and Beth are both members of the Association of Caving Instructors.
